As I always understood it, "being single" meant you weren't in an exclusive relationship with someone else. In other words, you don't have romantic feelings or attachment for another person at that time...just think of the word single. i means, being alone, solo. if you are dating someone, but they aren't your bf or gf, then you are still single! i have this one friend who thinks that you are only single if you don't have a gf, and you don't like anyone, or want to have one! if you are a secret admirer, then you are DEFINATLEY still single. so in other words, if you call them your girlfriend, then you are not single, but if you dont have someone to call a gf, then you are!
